A Sense of Wonderment

Yoga and holistic healing

Holistic Healing and herbal medicine work differently than allopathic medicine.  I believe all forms of healing are complementary and work well together.  Yet many people try to use herbal supplements the way they would over the counter or prescription medication and it just doesn’t work as well that way.

Herbal Medicine and Holistic Healing (including Yoga) work best when we treat the cause rather than the symptom.  So, for example, rather than generically treating a headache we try to find out what’s causing it.  Once we know what’s at the heart of the problem we can find the answer.  Poor digestion, hormonal imbalance, stress, chronic pain, repetitive motion, a fever, disturbed eyesight or a bump on the head are just a few examples of what can cause the symptom or a headache.  Each of these may be treated differently for different people.  It’s always best to find the cause and get rid of the problem permanently by bringing the body back into balance.

Next, dosages of herbs are different than dosages for over the counter medication and pharmaceuticals.  Normally that means that we take the herb in smaller doses more often.  This is because herbs and herbal remedies are whole, quite close to there natural state, and digest quickly.  Like food, they are normally out of the digestive tract in about 2 hours.  Herbal formulas will vary by the way they are delivered, the herbs, their use, and the person.

There is a difference between “curing” and “healing”.  Curing implies a force from outside oneself.  Healing comes from within.  Even though we may be employing external agents and practices to our system the healing is coming from inside ourselves and to our connection with the divine.  The Yoga Sutra says that the fastest way to find serenity is through a connection to the divine.  You define what that means for you.  There is also a saying that says; God helps those who helps themselves.  When you take the steps necessary to heal, surrender, and have faith in they direction your taking, you heal quickly and completely.

People are often surprised when I’m glad to hear that the doctors cannot figure out what the problem is.  That’s great news!  It means that the imbalance hasn’t yet settled into a full fledged disease.  The imbalance at this stage is much easier to bring back into balance using natural methods.

There is also such a thing as the acute illness.  The cold or flu that’s going around and it’s your turn.  Those are the easiest to treat because the body is already healing itself.  Our job is to support the process and try to ease our suffering in the process.
